Recipes that use Acerola In A Green Smoothie

I recommend using it in frozen puree form since it is closer to its whole food state, and will work much better when blending it in a green smoothie.

While the Presidents wife has been pushing for healthier foods in school lunches, some in government have been trying to undermine her efforts.

It’s the same old story, try to educate the public on healthier foods, and the food industry lobbyist start to put pressure on the politicians.

Here is an example of the latest from ABC news

But a proposed congressional bill would undo some of the standards set in place by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture (USDA), standards like restricting sodium, limiting starchy veggies like french fries, adding whole grains and boosting produce for school lunches.

“Obviously I have a little one and I would hope that they would get as much nutritional value into any meal,” said L.A. resident Stephanie Trott.

Parents like Trott are concerned about these proposed changes put in place by frozen-food manufacturers and potato growers that supply schools. They’ve lobbied Congress to halt efforts, claiming new standards are too strict and noting the government is overlooking the nutrients that potatoes and other starchy veggies offer.

Reminiscent of the Reagan administration calling ketchup a vegetable, there is a bigger food fight concerning tomato paste.

Currently the USDA calls 2 tablespoons of pizza sauce a vegetable. The USDA wants to increase that to a half-cup, roughly 4 tablespoon more and limit corn, peas and french fries to two servings a week.

“They do need to change a little but not take so much away from them,” said Whittier resident Jessica Casillas.

Some argue the government shouldn’t dictate what children eat, others say changes would be costly and burdensome.

Some would argue that if the parents of this country are going to continue to allow the youth of this country to eat themselves into an early grave that it is the responsibility of the government to protect it’s citizens. It is obvious that obesity is an epidemic health issue for the American population and is a unnecessary drain on our health care system.

When the free choices of the people have a negative effect on the population as a whole, it is governments duty to put in place steps to try and remedy the problems. Healthy school lunches might be the only healthy foods some kids have the opportunity to eat, in light of what they are getting at home from parents whom themselves come from the  junk food generation.



Robeks Launches New Smoothie Bowls vs Our Vitamix 5200

While the smoothies found at our house consists of some fresh or frozen fruits and assorted greens, I have to say the new smoothie bowls introduced by Robeks sounds interesting enough for me to want to do some experimenting here at home with our vitamix 5200 .

It shouldn’t be to hard to do some reverse engineering based on Robeks news release below, it seems like we could come up with some good homemade recipes.

Smoothie Maker – Healthy Eating Plate vs MyPlate

MyPlateNot long after the Government replaced the food pyramid with the MyPlate, and as the name suggests it is a plate with portioned out food groups to help show what people should eat to stay healthy. The Government wanted something so simple a child could understand how to use it... the problem according to Harvard Universities School of Public Health (HSPH) is Myplate leaves a lot of important facts out of the equation.

As you can see it says nothing about the different types of grains, for example whole grain bread is much better for you than white bread, but under the government's Myplate they rate the same space on the plate.

Also French Fries are potatoes and potatoes are vegetables, but neither earn the vegetables space on the Harvard's Healthy Eating Plate as you can see below.

The same holds true for the types of proteins and the fact that the Healthy Eating Plate does not show dairy as a daily requirement and actually discourages it's daily use.

The Healthy Eating Plate gives more information to help you understand more than the MyPlate does.    Walter Willett, Professor of Epidemiology and Nutrition and chair of the Department of Nutrition at HSPH said:

“Unfortunately, like the earlier U.S. Department of Agriculture Pyramids, MyPlate mixes science with the influence of powerful agricultural interests, which is not the recipe for healthy eating,”

“The Healthy Eating Plate is based on the best available scientific evidence and provides consumers with the information they need to make choices that can profoundly affect our health and well being.”

The scientists at HSPH say the USDA's MyPlate is not good enough because it should tell you that:

  • Whole grains are better for your health than refined grains.
  • Some high-protein foods such as fish, poultry, beans and nuts are healthier than red meats and processed meats.
  • Some fats are beneficial.
  • Potatoes are different to other vegetables.
  • You don't have to eat dairy at every meal: in fact there is little evidence that a high intake of dairy foods protects against osteoporosis, and a much bigger amount of evidence points to a high dairy intake being harmful to health.
  • You should limit your intake of sugary drinks.
  • Physical activity is an important part of weight control.


So how does all this effect us and our smoothie maker?  The thing is both Harvard and the Government missed the mark, because they were catering to masses and trying to keep things simple.

Instead of the Healthy Eating Plate saying " The more veggies and the greater the variety - the better" and "Eat plenty of fruit of all colors", how great would it of been to explain how easy it is to drink your veggies and fruits if you have a smoothie maker?

Just take a look at the video on our Blendtec vs Vitamix post and see all the vegetables and fruits that go into a good smoothie... there is no way most people will eat this much of a good thing everyday without a smoothie maker.

You can also use a smoothie maker to eat healthy protein, not just from a protein drink, but you can take real almonds and make almond butter, which is much better for you than the processed peanut butter you buy in the store that is loaded up with sugar.

So I would say out of the two plates that Harvard's Healthy Eating Plate is the best, but take the information and as Emeril would say "kick it up a notch" and use a smoothie maker to make it even better.


The Battle of the Super Blenders: Blendtec vs Vitamix

There is no debate in the industry that the two best smoothie maker / blenders are Blendtec and Vitamix, but  there is a healthy debate of which one is the best.  We are going to give you the facts to help you make an informed decision.

Perfectionists searching for the perfect blender have their work cut out for them. In the battle of Blendtec vs Vitamix, these superpowers are well matched. Both of these do the work quickly and easily. Their powerful motors and blending capacities chop up food making it easier for the body to digest and utilize. After comparing power, size, looks, operating sound and price, the shopper will pick the unit that works best for his or her needs.

Although Vitamix 5200 only has a 2 hp, low friction, ball bearing motor operating at 120 volts, it keeps up with the 3 hp, direct drive motor operating at 1500 watts in the Blendtec HP3A. The HP3A has 25. pre-programmed cycles and four changeable preset buttons while the 5200 lets the operator choose the speed he or she needs. Although the 5200 does not have a pulse option, operators simply turn the machine on and off when they need this feature.

Consumers like the smaller size and looks of the Blendtec. This unit is more attractive, 5 1/2 inches shorter and weighs almost 3 pounds less than its competition, which weighs 11 pounds. With the 64-ounce container, Vitamix at 20 1/2 inches is too tall to fit under normal cabinets. The square shape of the 64 ounce container on the HP3A keeps most products mixing without problems. If the action stops, the operators simply turns off the machine, removes the lid and breaks the air bubble with a spatula. However, the 5200 comes with a tamper, which stops the air pockets from forming in thick liquids.


Blendtec vs Vitamix Sound

Unfortunately, both blenders are noisy with their high-powered, hard-working motors. However, the 5200 is slightly quieter and preferred by some noise sensitive people. Its motor whine is not as high-pitched and piercing as the sound its competitor makes.


Blendtec vs Vitamix Price

The Blendtec is cheaper by $40 to $100. Although both units offer seven-year warranties, the HP3A has different times of protection for the motor, container and blade assembly. A warranty on the 5200 covers all components for full seven years.

As both of these super blenders work very well, the buyer has a difficult decision to make. The Blendtec HP3A has a more powerful motor, is lighter and smaller with a more attractive design and is cheaper. However, the Vitamix 5200 is quieter, gives a full seven year warranty on all parts and has a better designed mixing system with the tamper. Both of these get the job done.

1- I’ve repeatedly tried to dramatically increase my consumption of raw fruits and greens with little success. It is extremely difficult to chew large quantities of produce. Blended food is the answer. I have prepared all manner of concoctions using the Blentec WildSide blender which are delicious and nutritious. The Blendtec works as advertised. It is loud, but tolerably so. My drinks, smoothies and sauces are blended to smooth perfection in a remarkably short period of time. I definitely recommend getting the 96 oz container. I prepare food for one, or sometimes two, and find this larger size to be perfect. The container is also very easy to clean. I debated whether to buy the Blendtec or the Vitamix; after researching, I decided on the Blentec and am very pleased with my decision. The product is expensive, but it works very, very well. I use it several times a day. Think of it this way: instead of cooking your food on a stove or in an oven, you are processing the food in a blender. You are essentially cooking without heat.


2- This blender is top-of-the-line and I’m seriously impressed. The power is incredibly strong and it’s very easy to use (despite being digital). It starts slow and speeds up as you desire. BUT BEWARE!!! The top may appear to be on tightly but if it’s not YOU’RE IN TROUBLE! You really need to double-check each of the 4 seals on the top to make sure it’s tightly sealed all around. They really should have designed it with a “click” or something to let you know the seal is on – IT’S HARD TO TELL! After my first “explosion” experience I’ll always be a bit nervous that the seals aren’t tight enough. But it’s still the best blender out there.


3- We bought the Blendtec “Total Blender” at Costco about a month ago and have been really happy with it. Leave it to me to always be looking for something better. I read online about Blendtecs new “Wildside” with the larger pitcher and 4″ blade (vs 3″ blade on the Total Blender). According to Blendtecs website, this 4″ blade basically blends better and faster than the 3″ blade. As happy as I was with the 3″ blade, I could only imagine how happy I would be with the 4″ blade.

Well as it turns out, bigger is not always better. The first smoothie we made with the “Wildside” was one of our favorites. Applesauce, orange juice, and frozen strawberries. When we got done, there were still big chunks of strawberries in the smoothie. Ok, so we put it through another blend cycle and they are still there. Four blend cycles later, we still had chunks of strawberry. This never happened with the 3″ blade.

I call Blendtecs customer service today to try and get a handle on this. The lady on the phone thinks maybe we didn’t have enough liquid in the pitcher to blend properly. I realize you must have a certain amount of liquid to blend. When we did the four cycles on the 4″ blade, it was nearly all liquid because the frozen strawberries had not been blended up. The applesauce and oj would not have been so thick that it would not blend. The lady says she could listen to the machine run over the phone and see if there was possibly something wrong. I told her there was absolutely nothing wrong with how the blender was running. Just how the blender was blending. Needless to say, the customer support was really no support. But I don’t think she did anything wrong. I believe there is a design flaw with the “Wildside”.

So I get off the phone with her and set out to prove (somewhat more scientifically) that it is not a problem with the machine, rather a problem with the design. I throw the ingredients in (same as above) the Wildside and press the smoothie button (#2). It gets done and guess what, there are big chunks of frozen strawberries in my smoothie. I go get the “Total blender” pitcher (3″ blade), transfer the contents from the Wildside and press the smoothie button. It gets done and guess what, I have a perfectly blended, SMOOTH, smoothie.

I cannot be the only person who has discovered that this 4″ blade in the Wildside pitcher does not work. At least it doesn’t work with the 1560 watt motor that it comes with. What I think is happening is that the extra width of the 4″ blade (and no extra power to turn it) is creating a space between the tips of the blade where the frozen strawberries are kind of just hanging out and not being blended.

I’m not a blender engineer but I do know this: The 3″ blade works and the 4″ blade absolutely does not! Which begs me to ask, did Blendtec even test this before it was offered to the public. Or is the “Wildside” just a gimmick to sell more blenders? We love the “Total Blender” but will be sending the “Wildside” back to Amazon. What a disappointment on Blendtecs part not to mention a waste of our time.

“Purchased the package with the 3 blenders jars. This was after reading reviews, trying out the in-laws Blendtec and Vitamix, and of course saving up for it. It is a huge purchase after all. Really appreciate the low speed functions to make chunky soups and salsas, and the high speed for hiding veggies in my super-smooth fruit smoothies. Ultimately decided on this over the blendtec because of really slow low speed, and being able to have complete control over the speeds without having to waste time reprogramming. Veggies and fruits don’t go to waste because if they look like they’re turning they get tossed into a smoothie, wasting food used to be a huge problem for me so i can see myself recouping the costs in the long run

“Vitamix is the best thing ever. This is my second machine…the first one died after about 12 years going strong…that and I just wanted a new one! If your trying to decide between the two, your going to find mostly satisfied customers in both camps and very biased reviews from dealers of both.
Another thing you might want to consider before making the final choice is Vitamix has been in business for 85 years and Blendtec for around 24 years.
Here is something that is interesting is Vitamix earlier this year lost a lawsuit to Blendtec on Paten infringement of the mixing jar. You can read about it on Cleveland.com

After four years of arguing over the design of one of its commercial blender jars, Vitamix Corp. must pay more than $11 million in damages for infringing on a competitor’s patents, a federal jury in Utah decided.Vitamix Corp., an 89-year-old Olmsted Township manufacturer of high-end commercial and household blending machines, said that its XP blending jar was not based on one made by K-Tec Inc., but was created from its own designs and patents. Vitamix said its patents predate K-Tec’s.

But the jury in federal district court in Salt Lake City found otherwise last week, ruling that Vitamix’s jar was too similar to K-Tec’s five-sided Blendtec jar.

The jury said K-Tec is entitled to $8.9 million in lost profits and $2.1 million in royalties because of Vitamix’s infringement of two K-Tec patents.

In April, U.S. District Judge Tena Campbell issued a summary judgment agreeing with K-Tec and leaving it to the jury to set damages. She could rule later on whether damages should be tripled, to $33 million, and attorney’s fees awarded.

“We respect but disagree with the court’s ruling as well as the earlier summary judgment that Vitamix’s container was an infringement of the other company’s jar,” said Anthony Ciepiel, Vitamix’s vice president of sales and marketing.

So in this battle of the blenders who reigns supreme, Blendtec vs Vitamix?  Looks like you have the deciding vote :-)

While we think her post is a little bias and some what hyped, it is what she thinks of her Montel Williams Health master. While we never used this blender, it certainly is a lower cost alternative to the Blendtec and Vitamix. The lifetime warranty on the motor does help alleviate the fears that this machine can’t compare to the much higher cost, big two.

If you can’t afford one of the more proven blenders this is probably the best  low cost choice.
